Friday the 13th Was One of the Luckiest Days of My Life

Happy Birthday my Lil Princess

Motherhood Is An Art

She entered our lives on Friday the 13th.

We gave her the name of Iris after the Greek Goddess of Rainbows. Her middle name, Hope, was her Great Grandma’s middle name.

I never took my eyes off of her. Her beauty captivated me.

Her personality started to shine through and she filled us all with laughs and happiness.

I couldn’t get enough of dressing her up and still do to this day!

She was so darn cute and I just wanted to eat her up. She was so chubby at 5 months that I think I could have taken a few nibbles out of her!

Iris has continued to delight and amaze us everyday. She is extremely thoughtful and generous. When she celebrated her 6th birthday in Kindergarten she was allowed to bring in 3 extra treats to hand out to favorite teachers. When she got home I asked which…

Hail Cesar

If you have ever wondered what it would have been like to live under the demanding rule imagesof the great historical figure Julius Caesar, then you need look no further than the confines of our current household. What was once a peaceful land filled with the playful laughter of small children and a reasonable opportunity for one to sleep, has now been transformed in to a haven of caution and fear of its newly established leader. In fact, the only notable difference between the infamous dictator of the Roman Empire and my two year old son Cesar, is the way they spell their names. Other than that, the two share a great thirst for power and unrestricted domination over their domain…

Now before you assume that I am just overly tired and therefore exaggerating the situation, I will try my best to paint you a picture of the tyrannical culture that has invaded our once peaceful home… It is not a tale for the weak and timid. Yet it is a grim reminder to the unyielding wrath that comes with unchecked power and control…

When young Cesar first came into this world, it could be said that he was nothing short of the perfect child. He was a happy and playful lad filled with the cuteness of his youth. Though he couldn’t express himself with words, he had a natural ability warm your heart with nothing more than a few garbled sounds and a smile that could brighten up your day. Best of all, was that in his early childhood, he offered a reasonable amount of sleep to his loving parents who sacrificed everything to care and provide for him and give him everything that his little heart desired…

As the first year went by, little Cesar began to grow into a kindhearted and gentle soul. It seemed that everywhere we went, he had the uncanny ability to bring happiness into the lives of everyone he met. As time went by, he began to develop his communications skills and it was no surprise to his mother or I that one of his favorite words that he loved to use happened to be the word “Hi”… It was amazing to watch him interact in public settings. With a smile from ear to ear, he diligently upheld his self proclaimed role as the official greeter of our community.  As his vocabulary expanded to include his new favorite phrase “I Lub You”,  he refused to be ignored, and would take advantage of every chance he had to spread his love and kindness to anyone that happened to cross his path (whether they liked it or not)… A good example of this can be found in a short story written by his mother titled“The Cranky Lady Got Lubbed”. As his parents we couldn’t have asked for a sweeter child than this…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALittle did we know that it was all just a ploy; the perfect political campaign designed to win the hearts and minds of everyone and anyone that would stand in the way of his well thought out plan for global domination (Insert dramatic music here)…

Our little emperor is now two years old and what once was the image of a sweet, innocent, kindhearted child, has now revealed the true intentions of his reign…  He rules his kingdom with an iron fist. Yet, it is not unusual to find him smiling with pleasure at the conquest of his new kingdom… He established the proclamation that if he is awake, then nobody else shall sleep… Whatever Cesar wants, has now turned into one worded commands of a fierce general commanding his troops… “WATER!”   “SNACK!”   “OFF!”   “ON!”   “UPSTAIRS!” “DOWNSTAIRS” and the occasional “SHOW ON” have all become the familiar sound of a once harmonious dwelling… May God have mercy on your soul should you fail to meet his demands…

ALL HAIL CESAR!

Proud Keeper of His Name

His name is Bency (ben-cee) and he is the proud keeper of his grandfathers name. A name that is not only unique, but also represents a proud tradition and memory of the great 12-22-2009-21349-am1man that held the name before him. So what is it about a name that helps to define us and represents who we are? There are some that would claim that a name is simply a collection of words that we use to label ourselves and identify what family we belong to. I on the other hand, believe that there much more to a name than that. I believe that the name that we bare also plays a big part in who we are. A name can be the foundation to the rest of our lives. This belief I have in the power of a name has been nothing short of confirmed with the passing of my fathers name to my first born son Bency. His life to this point demonstrates that he will one day be as great of man as the Grandfather he never had the chance to meet…

There are times when I stop to really look closely at the mannerisms of my son Bency. Each time I do this, it surprises me just how much he reminds me of my father. For starters, he carries himself with a proud quiet demeanor that is only amplified by his meticulous attention to the slightest of details. He is a deep thinker that often demonstrates his feeling in his actions rather than his words. Much like my father, (as well as myself) he also has  a strong and rigid stubborn streak that often limits his ability to compromise. In fact, this is a trait that is common among the majority of my side of the family. He walks his own path, and takes no mind to those that try to sway him. This is probably my favorite trait about him…

Much like my father was, my son Bency is a child of many layers. Among them are his kind and loving spirit. When it shines, it has the power to brighten up even the darkest of rooms. He can melt your heart with wonderful smile, and his laughter is the heartbeat of OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAhis soul. He is a genuine person that tells you exactly what he is thinking, even if you don’t want to hear it. He is honest and trustworthy especially when he is sharing his love. His heart is dedicated to his mother. He has outwardly announced, that she is his one true love (Read more about this on Motherhoodisanart.com). He loves his older sister Iris and his younger brother Cesar to the degree that can be expected being the middle child. He is an artist, a scientist and a lover of music. He is a master of Angry Birds and a phenom when it comes to playing Kirby on the Wii.

As I do with all my children, I have a unique relationship with Bency. Often times I feel that we share a bond that is not always easy to understand. He is my oldest son, and I sometimes feel that I can be a little harder on him when it comes to my expectations of his actions (Maybe it’s due to the fact that when I look at him, its like looking into a mirror). There is so much about him that reminds me of myself. When we show our love to one another we OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAkeep it short and to the point. However, when he tells me that he loves me, he says it from the bottom of his heart. That in itself is the greatest feeling in the world. As a middle child, I understand how hard it is to see the love  and appreciation of who we are. That is why whenever Bency and I have a day of father and son bonding, I always try to let him know how proud I am of him, and show him just how much I love him. The pictures that he draws for me are special and well thought out. It is his way of showing me how much he loves me. That is why I will always make room to hang proudly on my wall.

I could not be more proud of a father than when it comes to my son Bency. I look forward to the many years that I will share with him and the time I still have to watch him grow into a fine, and sucessful young man. He has the spirit of a gentleman, and the heart of an angel. I know that my father is watching over with pride, the little boy that carries his name…

I dedicate this song to my son Bency… The proud keeper of the name 🙂

Wrapped Around Her Lil’ Finger

When she first came into my life, I stood there for a moment in awe of the powerful beauty downloadthat that filled the room. Within just a matter of seconds she had stolen my heart without even trying… My heart began to race as I looked upon her beauty, and there in a room filled with the sounds of busy people and commotion, all I could see was her… It was truly the greatest day of my life… As I reached out to hold her, I felt my knees began to tremble and I found it hard to breathe. From this day on, I knew that my life would never be the same again…

Now every parent sees something special in their children, and I cannot say that I am any different than most. I am very proud of my children and I cherish the wondrous gifts that they have brought into this world. My sweet daughter Iris is a perfect example of what I am talking about… Her name means ” Goddess of Rainbows” after a  favorite song of her mother and I. She brings a “Hope” for a brighter future in the many days to come…

Maybe, it is because she is our first child, or maybe it’s because she is my only daughter, whatever the reason, she will always have a very special  place of my heart. A place filled with warmth and protection from anything that this crazy world would bring her way. There is absolutely nothing within my means that I would not do for her… (I think that she knows it)

Ever since I can remember, Iris has always been an inspiration in the lives of others. She has a kind soul and a loving heart, and she is always ready to share them with other people. Even as a baby, she had the magical gift of bringing smiles to IMG_1851people who otherwise found it difficult to find things to smile about. She has a marvelous imaginary mind that looks for creativity in everything she does, and a memory that can recall the simplest of details in the experiences of her life. Beyond that, I would even say that she has a unique connection with the spiritual world. (Read more about this on motherhoodisanart.com)

She is a great big sister to her two younger brothers, and at times she can be best described as an extension of their mother. Though she can be firm with them at times, she is usually the first to run to their aid when one of them gets hurt. She is a positive influence on them in the ways of learning, as she is always ready to crack open a good book…

As I watched her grow, I learned a lot about what it means to be a father. She taught me OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAhow to laugh at the little things in life, by simply greeting me at the door with and excited “DADDY” when I came home from a bad day of work. She showed me that it is OK to cry (even for a daddy) when something sad happens in our lives… I learned that there comes a time in every father’s life, when he is no longer needed to help her climb the Monkey Bars at the park. But most important of all, she has taught me how to love someone unconditionally…

There is so much more that I could share with you about my little princess. But  I will save them for another time. Before I go, I would like to share with you all a memory that ranks above all others. It is the day that my sweet little Iris invited me to be her escort at her very first “Father Daughter Dance”… It was the first of many to come and she was the perfect date…

To my Dear Iris, I dedicate this song to the many more memories that we will create together

Fatherhood

When it comes to being a father, there are still a lot of things that I have learn. This I freely admit. Don’t get me wrong, for the most part, I like to think that I am doing a pretty good OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAjob. However, it would not surprise me a bit if you were to ask my 3 children and they told you a completely different story. I guess it all really boils down to perspective…

If only there were a class I could have taken that would have taught me all the things I needed to know about becoming a dad. Perhaps a guide book that could have outlined all the keys to fatherhood. Maybe then, I would not have had to learn about these things on the fly. Granted, I do have several examples of this job that I can take away from the experiences of my own father. However, lets face it, a lot has changed over the years and the challenges we face today are not exactly the same as they were back then.

Without any instruction, I have accepted the challenge of fatherhood. An honor that has taught me many things about who I am. The greatest test of manhood and at times it feels like a mission impossible. Having said that, I am proud to admit that I would not trade it for anything…

Keeping in mind that I am by no means the father of the year. There is just a few things that I would like to share with my children. Just maybe it might help them to understand why I do the things I do…

  1. I know that there are times that I can be a little bit hard on you. Only because I want you to know that nothing in life is free; not even trust and respect. Everything in life that you want has to be earned.
  2. When it comes to all of you, I want you to know that you are each my favorite in your own special way. You are individuals that are blessed with unique talents. I am proud to watch you explore your interests and grow from your experiences.
  3. When it comes to life, I want you to know that you can accomplish anything that you dream of. All you have to do is give it your best, and everything else will follow. No matter what, I will always be here to support you along the way.
  4. Always remember this… No matter what happens as you go through life (even if you think that it is something that I will not approve), you can always come to me and talk about it. I promise to do my best to not be judgmental. Instead, I will be there to offer you a hug and help you through your trying times.
  5. Above all else, if you only remember one thing from this list. I want you know that I love you with all my heart, and there is nothing in this world that will change that.

I know that I have made some mistakes along the way, and I am sure that I will make a few more in the years to come. It is up to you to help me out. After all, they were all out of guide books on how to be the perfect dad…

A Reflection of Him

Over the past few nights, I have been having some unusually vivid dreams about my father. I mainly find it strange, only because I often do not remember my dreams the next day. However, this time I not only remember what I was dreaming about, but images have been sticking with me throughout the day.

To give you a bit of background, my father passed away several years ago from pancreatic cancer. I was away at school, and it was my fathers request that nobody was to tell me about his illness because he did not want it to become a distraction to me and my studies. As I reflect back on this, It always stirs up bad feelings for me, as I have always felt that I never really got the chance to say goodbye to him. After all these years, I still hold on to these feelings. Could this be his way of telling me that it could be time to let them go, or is there more to it than that…

A Time of Self Reflection

Staring at the man in the mirror,

I suddenly got a glimpse into the wonders of the universe.

Where I came from…

Where I am today…

But there was more to it than that,

I saw another face looking back…

A look of love…

A stare of encouragement…

There was something all to familiar about what I saw…

In a flash of inspiration,

I thought I saw the images of where I can go from here…

What he truly wanted from me…

So many choices flashed before my eyes,

Some lead to laughter…

Others lead to sadness…

And just like that, all I could see was me…

The Beauty of Greatness

We have all heard the saying “Behind every great man, there is a great woman…” Now, at this point in my life, I would have to say that I am far from being classified as a great man. However, if there is any truth or merit to this saying, I have absolutely no doubt that I am destined for greatness… You see, I am lucky enough to be married to the greatest woman of all times… Knowing that I have her there by my side to support me in all of life’s decisions, I am more than certain that I can accomplish anything…

Our Wedding Day

Those valleys of life were inviting
The forests of many faces surrounded me
Lost in the shadows of unknowing…

Across the rivers of great inspiration
Beyond the tall mountains of fear
Walking the path to my destiny…

I came upon a beautiful valley
At the center grew a beautiful rose
A treasure just beyond my reach…

Swept away by the sting of reality
Taken across the plains of desire
I knew that I had found my calling…

The rose in the valley of wanting
This gift of love I must have
Looking back… I would do it all over again!

I dedicate this to my beautiful wife Melissa who has been my greatest inspiration…

I love you so much!!!
